Software Engineer · Frontend-Focused Full-Stack

Muhammed Mustafa

I build React interfaces, component libraries and right-to-left layouts, and the Node.js APIs behind them.

Former full-time engineer at freeCodeCamp. In 2022–2023 I merged more pull requests into its main repository than any other human contributor, and every one was reviewed by the core team.

Same markup, one attribute. The card mirrors because it uses CSS logical properties, the approach I used to bring RTL support to freeCodeCamp.

About

Open-source engineering, reviewed in public

I started contributing to freeCodeCamp as a volunteer in spring 2022 and was hired full-time that July. For the next 16 months I worked across the React/TypeScript client, the new Node.js API and Chapter, freeCodeCamp's event-management tool for nonprofits.

Most of my work is on the frontend: CSS architecture, shared components and layouts that work in both writing directions. As a native Arabic speaker, I built the platform's right-to-left support. I'm just as comfortable on the server, writing Fastify routes with Prisma or GraphQL features with Apollo and PostgreSQL.

Every change I've made there went through public code review. You can read all 560 merged pull requests on GitHub.

Muhammed is a consummate developer with an encyclopedic knowledge of full stack development.

Quincy Larson, founder of freeCodeCamp, who managed Muhammed directly. LinkedIn recommendation, Jan 2024.

Where I've worked

  1. Software Development Consultant · full-time

    freeCodeCamp · Remote –

    • Merged 373 pull requests into freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp in 2022–2023 across the React/TypeScript client, the new Node.js API and shared tooling.
    • Built the platform's right-to-left layout for Arabic learners and extended it across the product in about 20 follow-up PRs.
    • Helped migrate the client from React-Bootstrap to an in-house Tailwind CSS / Radix UI component library, one component at a time.
    • Implemented REST endpoints for the new Fastify + Prisma API and added Sentry error monitoring.
    • Delivered 144 merged PRs to Chapter (Next.js, Apollo GraphQL, PostgreSQL).
    • Wrote tests for new API routes and maintained the Cypress end-to-end suite; refactored deprecated code into typed React components.
    • Maintained freeCodeCamp's Node.js libraries, reviewed community PRs, and mentored teammates and contributors through pair programming.
  2. Frontend Developer · freelance

    Self-employed · Suez, Egypt –

    • Front-end web development work for clients as an independent developer.

Right-to-left layout for freeCodeCamp.org

Problem
The float-based React client had no right-to-left support, so Arabic learners got a left-to-right interface.
Solution
RTL layout support: mirrored navigation, RTL typography, direction-aware icons and a root dir attribute. Spacing moved to CSS logical properties so components work in both directions.
My contribution
Authored the initial RTL PR, then about 20 follow-ups covering the code console, profile, search, challenge tables and code blocks.

freeCodeCamp's new API

Problem
freeCodeCamp was replacing its legacy API server with a new TypeScript service.
Solution
A Fastify + Prisma API with typed routes, plus Sentry error monitoring as a Fastify plugin.
My contribution
15 merged API PRs: challenge saving, profile and settings updates, email validation and subscriptions, deprecating a legacy endpoint, the Prisma JSON protocol and the Prisma v5 upgrade.

Component library & Bootstrap migration

Problem
The client's UI was built on React-Bootstrap, which the team was replacing with its own component library.
Solution
An in-house React component library built with Tailwind CSS and Radix UI, adopted one component at a time while the site stayed live.
My contribution
Built FormGroup, ControlLabel, Panel, Row/Col and theme support, then swapped out Bootstrap panels, list groups, images and progress bars across the client.

Chapter: event management for nonprofits

Problem
Nonprofits needed a self-hosted tool to run community chapters and events.
Solution
Chapter, an open-source Next.js + Apollo GraphQL + PostgreSQL app with 1.9k GitHub stars.
My contribution
144 merged PRs: dashboard search, paginated queries, lazy loading, invite-only events, venue management and screen-reader-friendly forms.
